Here comes the sun…

We sprang ahead today, and the weather was finally dry enough and warm enough to be outside to do some yardwork. I cleared away the winter debris, filling my compost bin with lovely leaves and worms, and I unearthed some signs of spring getting ready to bloom.

You see the weirdest things when you can’t sleep

A few nights ago I was up watching late night television because I could not sleep, and I saw this. I’m glad there’s a clip online, since this was so weird a part of me thought I just dreamt the whole thing.

One for the Long Island metal fans… a name from the past

I know a lot of you Long Island kids fondly remember Fingers Metal Shop. I’d listen to WBAB on my boom box, in bed with the lights off… that’s how I learned about Priest and Metallica and Iron Maiden… and local acts like Zebra and Twisted Sister. It was awesome.

Did you know he’s on Facebook? Did you know he’s going to be reviving the show online?? Go on, go become a fan and listen in from day one!

On Making Wine, part 1

Living in the New York metro area, the idea of making anything from scratch is fascinating. We can have whatever we want, whenever we want it. You can buy amazing artisanal products easily, and often for a reasonable price. Yet some of us love the process – I know people who not only knit but spin and weave, who can and preserve, who bake bread, who make jewelry… but wine? The process is mystifying for people who don’t know what goes into it, and daunting for those who do (due to the equipment and space needed – space being in short supply for New Yorkers). So when I tell people I’m making wine, they all want to know how it works.

I’m in love with wine. I love it so much I got certified. So when someone in my wine club suggested that we try our hands at making it I thought it was a great idea, but I knew we needed to do it with people who’d done it before. There are many places around here you can make wine but we decided to try out A Little Taste of Purple.

Next time we’ll talk about the start of the process. If you have any questions you want me to answer as we go along, let me know!

Or, one more reason why I don’t go to many concerts anymore

It’s sad that the industry has developed like this. Bands scalping their own tickets? Insane.

Mark Your Calendars, George R. R. Martin fans

George R. R. Martin sets a firm release date for A Dance With Dragons. It feels right somehow to anticipate a massive fantasy novel right near my birthday. All the HP books were released around this time of year, right? I am cautiously excited…
